Women's Golf Completes Day One at Pinehurst Challenge

March 15, 2014

PINEHURST, N.C. - The Illinois State women's golf team completed the first round of play Saturday at the Pinehurst Challenge with a team score of 325 against the 14-team field. The Redbirds were led by Brianna Cooper and Hayley Guyton on the par-72, Pinehurst Resort, measuring at 5,949 yards.

Head coach Darby Sligh felt her team missed an opportunity on the first day of competition and hopes the weather doesn't play a factor with Sunday's final two rounds.

"We didn't take advantage of the holes that we could have scored on," Sligh said. "It's unfortunate, because this course sets up well for us. We feel we really missed a big opportunity. We need to be more aggressive on and around the greens Sunday, especially before the rain sets in."

Both Cooper and Guyton shot a 6-over-par 78 after the first day of competition. Rachel Powers carded an 82 at the end of the first day, while Jordyn Wyzgowski shot an 87. Carlee Cossell was one stroke behind Wyzgowski with an 88. Lauren English competed as an individual and had a first-round score of 76, shooting a 4-over-par.

Due to darkness, not all of the teams completed the first round of competition, which will be completed at the beginning of the day Sunday.

The Redbirds return to the course for the final two rounds Sunday at 7 a.m. (CST). Rain may become a factor during the final rounds.
