Redbirds Open Rio Verde Invitational Tied for 14th Place

RIO VERDE, Ariz. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day one of the Rio Verde Invitational with a team score of 315, as the Redbirds find themselves in a three-way tie with Missouri Valley Conference rival Bradley and UMKC for 14th place at the Rio Verde Country Club.

"Friday had some struggles, but also some bright spots," head coach Darby Sligh said. "I'm really proud of the way we fought during the rough patches, and my outlook continues to be positive on what this team can accomplish. Saturday is an important day for us to continue moving forward towards our goals."

Seniors Rachel Powers and Jordyn Wyzgowski led the team and both tied for 26th on the leaderboard with a score of 76.

Junior Hayley Guyton carded a one-round score of 80, tying for 65th place, while senior Carlee Cossell shot an 82, tying for 85th. Lauren English, in her second tournament as a Redbird, finished the day with a score of 99.

Montana (298) is in first place, with two of its golfers in the top-five on the leaderboard. MVC powerhouse Wichita State is one-stroke behind in second with a score of 299, two strokes ahead of third place Eastern Michigan with a combined team score of 301.

ISU looks to climb the rankings in the second round of play Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.
