Redbirds Finish JU Amelia Island Collegiate in 13th Place

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. - The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two of the JU Amelia Island Collegiate Invitational Tuesday with a team score of 954 (315-323-316), finishing 13th overall at the Amelia National Golf Club.
Senior Rachel Powers led the team the whole way with a score of 229 (79-77-73). Powers was able to advance from 46th place to finish tied for 32nd overall.
Head coach Darby Sligh is proud of her upperclassmen and looks at this competition as a learning experience.
"This week was rough, but I can't say that we didn't grow from it," Sligh said. "Rachel executed her plan Tuesday, and I couldn't be more excited about some of the other gains we made across the line-up. Losing is never fun, and we have a lot of ground to cover before our next event."
Junior Hayley Guyton carded a three-round score of 239 (79-81-79), tying for 57th place, while redshirt junior Brianna Cooper, who shot a 245 (82-84-79), improving to a tie for 67th. Senior Jordyn Wyzgowski shot a 247 (75-87-85), tying for 70th place, and rounding out the Redbird lineup was junior newcomer Lauren English in 75th place with a combined score of 250 (83-81-86).
Florida International tallied a 859 (277-282-300) placed first and three of its golfers in the top-five on the leaderboard. Kennesaw State is 12-strokes behind in second with a score of 871 (290-282-299), 19 strokes ahead of third-place Daytona State with an 890 (295-294-301).
The Redbirds will be back in action Friday March 17 at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz.
