Redbird Tennis Heads to ITA Regional Championships
Oct. 15, 2008
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team will conclude its fall season at the ITA Wilson Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The tournament begins Thursday, Oct. 16 and lasts through Monday, Oct. 20. The Redbirds are not scheduled to compete until Friday, Oct. 17. Competition will be held at the Dills Indoor Stadium and George M. Billingsley Tennis Center.
After coming off a short weekend at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky., the Redbirds are well-rested and prepared for a tough weekend of ITA competition.
"This is the last tournament of the season," said head coach Cris James. "This is what we have worked up to. It will be a very tough tournament with a lot of good competition. The fall season is all about improving, I have seen the guys improve throughout the fall tournaments and I am hoping we send a few guys or doubles teams deep into competition."
The Redbirds head into the weekend with a 38-25 overall record in singles matches. Freshman Skip Span leads the squad with eight singles victories and sophomore Timon Reichelt follows with seven wins.
"Tennis is a funny sport, said James. "Confidence plays a daily role in how an athlete performs. You can walk away feeling great or extremely disappointed. I think we have worked on confidence in practice and in previous tournaments and now understand what it takes and where their minds have to be when competing."
This year the ITA Central Regional Championships will host 70 players from 11 schools, including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Wichita State, Tulsa, St. Louis, UM-Kansas City, Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Nebraska and Drake.
