Junior Alban Renard continues to plow over opponents, however the Illinois State men's tennis team continues to lose close matches. This time they fell to conference leader Indiana State 4-3, Saturday at the Evergreen Racquet Club. The loss drops the `Birds to 8-10 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.

Despite twisting an ankle in the second set, Renard battled through the pain to win his ninth straight singles match at the No. 6 position, by downing Kevin Doh (6-3, 5-7, 10-6). Renard also teamed up with Luka Marinkovic at the No. 3 doubles position to win the only doubles match for the Redbirds, dropping Rishi Behl and Will Moseley (8-5).

Head coach Greg Kennett is thrilled with Renard's play and would like to see his toughness rub off on the rest of the team.

"Alban is just playing great, he did a real nice job today," said Kennett. "Even though he had an injury he battled through it, some of the other guys could really learn a lesson from that."

At the No. 2 singles position, Djordje Uskokovic turned his game around to win for the first time in three outings, dropping Simon Thornewell in straight sets (7-5, 7-5). The only other Redbird to win a singles match was Luka Marinkovic at the No. 4 position downing Behl (7-6, 4-6, 10-6).

In doubles play, the normally untouchable duo of Uskokovic and Ben Pettinari fell at the No. 1 position to Thornewell and Aaron Phillips (8-6). At the No. 2 spot, Guillermo Gomez and Tim Link lost to Anton Tsymbalov and Christopher Eldon (8-2).

Kennett knows that the teams poor doubles play is costing the `Birds the close matches.

"We are definitely struggling in doubles right know," said Kennett. "Today Guillermo and Pettinari really did not play solid in doubles, and that really hurt us."

The Redbirds will be back in action tomorrow when they host Southern Illinois at the McCormick Courts at 11 a.m.
