Marinkovic, Tobar Rewarded by MVC for Academic and Athletic Success

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Luka Marinkovic and sophomore Daniel Tobar earned double awards for their strength on the tennis court and their contribution in the classroom as the pair was named to the 2007 men's Missouri Valley All-Conference Tennis Team and to the Scholar-Athlete Teams, as announced by the league office and voted on by Valley coaches.
Tobar and Marinkovic were named to the all-conference team for their performance at No. 2 doubles. The pair was 6-0 in league action and held a perfect 8-0 mark overall. This marks their second-straight honor in doubles; Last year the tandem was the No. 3 all-conference doubles team.
Head coach Greg Kennett was proud of the duo and happy to see that their efforts together were acknowledged.
"This award was certainly deserved," said Kennett. "They started playing together in March and went undefeated I am proud of their efforts."
Marinkovic and senior Yohann Nograbat were named to the Valley's all-select team. Marinkovic had an outstanding season playing at the three and four singles position for the Redbirds. The junior tallied a 14-4 overall record and was 5-1 in Valley action. This marks his second consecutive year on the all-conference team.
Playing at the top position for the Redbirds, Nograbat was rewarded for his effort as the La Barthe de Neste, France, native was 8-12 overall and held a 3-3 mark in the MVC.
"Luka and Yohann making the all-select team shows the respect that the Valley coaches have for those two players," said Kennett.
The Redbirds' (12-7, 5-1) talented squad was not only awarded for their contributions on the court, but in the classroom as well. Marinkovic, Tobar and Nuno Jacinto were each selected as members of the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team.
"It is a great honor to receive a MVC Scholar-Athlete award," said Kennett. "It shows the dedication of student-athletes and their commitment to be a well rounded in all their accomplishments."
Marinkovic was unanimously selected to the Scholar-Athlete First-Team for his 3.84 cumulative GPA in finance. This is the Uzice, Serbia, native's second year to be included as a first-team selection.
Joining Marinkovic on the Scholar-Athlete First-Team is his No. 2 doubles partner, Tobar. The Santiago, Chile, native is an international business major and holds a 3.43 cumulative GPA. Also earning an academic honor is sophomore Jacinot, who was named to the honorable mention team for his 3.16 cumulative GPA in international business.
Marinkovic, Tobar, Nograbat, and Jacinot return to action today at 3 p.m. when the Redbirds take on Creighton in the first round of the State Farm MVC Championships.
