ST. LOUIS - - Illinois State's Erik Brunskog is the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as released by the league office Tuesday. ISU's lone senior, Brunskog is the first Redbird men's tennis player to earn player of the week honors during the 2013-14 spring season.
Brunskog returned from an injury that sidelined him for most of the spring season with a perfect weekend in No. 1 singles competition. On April 11, against I-74 rival Bradley, Brunskog rallied from a first-set deficit to defeat Arthur Romanet, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6, in No. 1 singles. The Redbirds went on to smother the Braves, 6-1.
Brunskog again defended the No. 1 singles spot April 12, defeating Alen Sailbasic of No. 38 Drake, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1). Brunskog's victory over Sailbasic marked ISU's only win against the nationally-ranked Bulldogs, as the Redbirds fell, 6-1.
A native of Linkoping, Sweden, Brunskog has tailed an overall singles record of 24-19 since joining the Redbirds in 2012-13. A leader on and off the court, Brunskog will be graduating with a business degree in May.
Brunskog and the Redbirds conclude the regular season this Saturday, April 19 at Southern Illinois before returning home to host the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, April 25-27, at Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
