NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's tennis team earned the No. 66 position among NCAA Division I programs Tuesday, according to the latest Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings. Head coach Cris James and the Redbirds are excited to break into the national rankings.

"We are happy and pumped up about the national ranking," James said. "One of our goals this year was to earn national recognition. It is great for the team; it is recognition of the progress we've made."

The Redbirds, who are 6-3, last appeared in the national rankings in April of 2001, when they were ranked No. 74.

Illinois State recently got an important 4-3 win over Big-Ten opponent Purdue, which currently resides just ahead of ISU at the No. 65 spot. Junior Filip Miljevic leads the team in singles wins with 17, which already matches his season total from last year. Timon Reichelt and Matej Zlatkovic have been a force on the doubles court for the Redbirds. The pair has won 10 of their last 11 matches and leads the team with 13 wins.

"It is motivating for the team to see their hard work pay off," James said. "Now we have to keep improving and getting better. We have to set a new goal to finish the season among the top-75 teams in the nation."

The Redbirds play three of their next four matches against ranked opponents, which should give them the opportunity to move up in the rankings with victories. ISU will return to action Saturday, Mar. 6, to take on No. 43 Indiana, in Bloomington, Ind., at 9 a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
