LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Illinois State men's tennis team had its weekend cut short Saturday at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The Redbirds could not grab enough wins to advance into Sunday's final round. The matches were held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

In singles play, junior Xavier Riart-Ferrer was knocked out in the quarterfinal round of Flight C by Toledo's Wade Ward, 7-6 (0), 6-4. Junior Michael Hobson was also defeated in the Flight D quarterfinals by Eric West (Southern Illinois), 6-4, 6-2. Filip Miljevic, Daniel Tobar and Micah LeMoine each fell in the singles consolation brackets Saturday.

In doubles action, the Redbirds could not down the competition. The pair of Timon Reichelt and Miljevic lost to Will Beck and Patrick Bandy of Kentucky, 8-6, in Flight A doubles. Sheharyar Wali and Henrik Willers (Lander) outlasted Redbird duo Tobar and Skip Span, 8-5, to advance to the Flight B semifinal round.

Even though the Redbirds did not make it into the final round of tournament play, they were able to make individual improvements to their game.

"We lost a lot of tough and close matches," said head coach Cris James. "It's disappointing when you can't pull through to win. However, several of the guys improved on things we had been working on in practice, like finishing and remaining competitive throughout an entire match."

The Redbirds conclude their fall season at the ITA Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark. Competition begins Thursday, Oct. 16 and runs through Monday, Oct. 20.
