MUNCIE, Ind. - Head coach Cris James and the Illinois State men's tennis team will be heading home early after a disappointing day at the Ball State Invitational. The Redbirds were unable to advance to the semifinals in both singles and doubles play, posting a 1-3 record on the day.

"We had a bad day overall," James said. "We feel like we should have been one of the best teams here but we didn't have the results we were looking for."

In singles, Filip Miljevic started strong winning his first match against Ball State's Andres Monroy, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7. He was later defeated by Phil Orno of Cleveland State, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8. In doubles play Skip Span and Xavier Riart-Ferrer were downed by Robert Fox and John Haley of Cleveland State, 8-6. Miljevic and Matej Zlatkovic fell to Marquette's Mark Rutherford and John Schwerin, 8-5.

"As a team we need to get better at competing through the entire match," James said. "None of the matches were played completely through today. We let our opponents dictate what happened on the court and we didn't begin the matches strong."

The team will have an off day tomorrow and be back at practice on Monday where they will work to improve their game.

"I think we need to gain a renewed sense of urgency." James said. "We will work on focusing our game and completing our matches."

The Redbirds will be sending four players to the ITA All-American Championships next week in Tulsa, Okla. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
