Redbirds Conclude Day Three of Vredevelt Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team completed their third and final day at the Vredevelt Invite hosted by Western Michigan. Jacob Wilson capped off a perfect weekend in singles play going, 4-0.
Wilson defeated junior Dougie Barnard of Notre Dame, 6-4, 1-0. First-year head coach Mark Klysner was impressed by Wilson's play all weekend long.
"Jacob was a good leader for us at the Vredevelt Invite, going 4-0 in his singles matches," Klysner said.
The rest of the day was filled with hard fought matches by the Redbirds. Rodrigo Oliveira lost a battle to Mark Kuelker of Cleveland State, 7-6, 7-6. Rolando Torrellas was defeated by Western Michigan's Jim Beck in the first set, 7-6. Torrellas then came back to take the second, 7-6, before eventually falling,1-0, in the third set.
"Overall I think the weekend went well and the guys played hard." Klysner said. "I thought we fought hard and put up some good results."
Doubles play was a strong point for the Redbirds all weekend but Sunday's action came up short. Jakub Eisner and Torrellas lost, 8-4, to Notre Dame's Michael Fredrick and Barnard. Brunskog and Oliveira were in a battle with Jimmy Roebeker and Mesa Mei of Xavier, but lost, 8-7. Appanervanda and Wilson lost a close match to Joey Leto and Michael Tebon of UW-Green Bay,
The weather forced the matches to move inside during the middle of singles action. The tournament cut the second doubles session and the results for the day only included one singles and one doubles event.
The Redbirds will travel to Tulsa, Okla. Sept. 28-Oct. 6., to compete at the ITA All-American Championships. The matches run all day long and will be held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
