Redbirds Win Eight of 13 Matches at Vredevelt Invite

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Illinois State men's tennis team won eight out of 13 possible matches Saturday at the Vredevelt Invite hosted by Western Michigan. The Redbirds bounced back from yesterday's slow start, and won two of their three doubles matches.

Jakub Eisner and Rolando Torrellas defeated Western Michigan's Nadian Indre and Jim Beckwith,8-5. The other doubles matchup included a victory from Muddappa Appanervanda and Jacob Wilson beating Rob Torsch and Jeremy Schneider of Xavier, 8-3. Erik Brunskog and Rodrigo Oliveira fell,8-2, to Adam Terull and Michael Moe of Xavier.

First-year head coach, Mark Klysner, was extremely happy with the way the Redbirds competed in Saturday's doubles action.

"I was much more pleased with the way we came out playing today." Klysner said. "We started the day with some solid wins in doubles action and took that momentum into singles play."

Eisner and Wilson put together impressive performances to lead the way for the Redbirds in singles play. Eisner won both of his singles matchups against Michael Moe of Xavier, 6-4, 1-0, and defeated Cleveland State's Ali Shabib, 6-2, 6-3. Wilson won over Nolan Marks of Cleveland State, 6-4, 6-1, while also beating Xavier's Matt Bishop, 6-3, 6-4.

"Eisner and Wilson both had great days in singles winning both of their matches." Klysner said.

Oliveira and Torrellas were victorious for the Redbirds as well. Oliveira defeated UW-Green Bay's Rowan Isaaks, 6-0, 6-2, but came up short to Leopold Islinger of UW-Green Bay losing, 6-3, 6-4.



Torrellas beat UW-Green Bay's Isaaks, 6-4, 6-2 in singles action. Notre Dame's Matt Dooley defeated Torrellas, 6-4, 6-2.

Appanervanda came up short in both of his singles matches for the day. Appanervanda lost to Bishop of Xavier, 6-1, 6-0, and also lost to Western Michigan's Matthew Hamilton, 6-3, 6-2. Brunskog lost a nail-biter to Xavier's Mesa Mei, 6-3, 7-6.

"Hopefully we can close out the weekend with some positive results tomorrow," Klysner said.

The Redbirds will continue play at the Vredevelt Invite Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with singles play. Doubles play will start at 9:30 a.m. Tomorrow's matches will complete the three-day tournament.
