Redbirds Tennis Bested by No. 57 Iowa, 7-0
Feb. 13, 2009
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Sophomores Timon Reichelt and Filip Miljevic partnered to capture the No. 2 doubles match for the Illinois State men's tennis team, but it was not enough for a Redbird victory, as they fell, 7-0, to No. 57 Iowa, Friday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City, Iowa. Illinois State's spring record dropped to 2-3, as Iowa improved to 3-1.
The Hawkeyes topped Illinois State in all six singles matches. Reichelt was defeated by No. 119 Christian Bierich, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 1 position. Reinoud Haal bested freshman Skip Span, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, at the No. 3 singles spot.
Doubles action favored the Hawkeyes, as Illinois State came away with a lone win at the No. 2 spot. Reichelt and Miljevic topped Haal and Greg Holm, 8-7. Michael Hobson and Micah LeMoine dropped their doubles match to No. 60 Tommy McGeorge and Will Vasos, 8-3.
"The doubles matches were a little disappointing," said head coach Cris James. "Although we made progress from last weekend, we still need to focus on the importance of winning the doubles' point. I'm not completely satisfied with how we performed in singles. We played well, but we need to take better advantage of the opportunities that come our way. The final team score does not reflect the effort we put forth."
The Illinois State men's tennis team continues its weekend in Iowa City, as it faces Western Michigan Saturday at 1 p.m., at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center.
