Men's Tennis Challenged against No. 25 Tulsa and SMU

TULSA, Okla - The Illinois State men's tennis team dropped it's first two dual matches of the spring season Sunday against SMU, 4-1, and No. 25 Tulsa, 6-1, in Tulsa, Okla. Doubles partners Jacob Wilson and Urh Kranjc Domiter, and Muddappa Appanervanda, Rodrigo Oliveira helped the Redbirds gain momentum in their first matchups off the spring season.

Wilson and Domiter defeated Slobodkins and Tony Russell, 6-4. Appanervanda and Oliveira beat Mischa Nowicki and Julio Olaya , 6-1.

Head Coach Mark Klysner appreciated his teams intensity against SMU.

"I thought we started off strong with the doubles matches. In singles play, we had our chances to pull off a win but lost four tie breakers which really hurt," Kylsner said.

No. 73 ranked Arturs Kazijevs defeated Jakub Eisner, 6-5, 6-3. New addition Domiter lost to Alex Sanders, 6-3, 6-2.

Wilson was beat by Mischa Nowicki, 6-2, 6-5, while, Dylan Steffens lost a tough matchup to Arkidjas Slobodkins, 6-5, 6-2.

Three matches went unfinished against SMU. Eisner and Rolando Torrellas played Nate Lammons and Sanders, 5-2. In singles action Torrellas faced Olaya, 6-4, 2-6, 1-1 and Oliveira played Lammons to a 5-6, 3-5 match.

The evening matchup against No. 25 ranked Tulsa tested the Redbirds endurance. Oliveira highlighted the night by defeating Juan Carvajal, 6-4, 6-5.

Esiner lost to Japle De Klerk, 6-3, 6-1. Kranjnc was defeated by Carlos Bautista, 6-5, 6-0, and Wilson lost to Alejandro Espejo, 6-2, 6-1.

Torrellas was beat by Dylan McCloskey, 6-2, 6-1. Steffens was defeated by Tulsa's Daniel Santos, 6-1, 6-2.

"Our guys played hard tonight. We started a little slow. But after getting into the singles matches we definitely looked a lot better."

In doubles action Esiner and Torrellas lost to Marsland and McCloskey, 6-3. Wilson and Kranjnc lost to Espejo and De Klerk, 6-2.

Oliveira and Appanervanda's match was incomplete against Santos and Bautista, 4-4.

"We have some things to work on this week before we host Belmont next weekend, but I like the effort the guys are putting in," Klysner said.
