Illinois State’s Timon Reichelt and Matej Zlatkovic won on the No. 2 doubles court but it was not enough as the Redbirds lost their season opener to Nebraska, 7-0. Reichelt and Zlatkovic were able to beat Francois Van Impe and Benedikt Lindheim, 9-8, at the Nebraska Tennis Center, Saturday evening. Head coach Cris James hopes his team can use this loss as a confidence builder.

“In doubles we were competitive and had our chances to win,” James said. “If you look at the scores it was disappointing for us. We wanted to be more competitive in singles but we didn’t dictate the play of the match. We will use this as a wake-up call and make improvements.”

On the singles court, freshman Alexander Pelaez lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Chris Aumueller who is No. 30 in the nation. Filip Miljevic was the only Redbird to win a singles set, losing in a tie-breaker to Van Impe, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10).

“Filip is a true competitor,” James said. “He hustles and fights for every point which is something we need to strive to get our other players to do.”

Illinois State competed at a high level on the doubles court but was unable to gain the point as 55th ranked Pelaez and Miljevic lost, 9-8, to Nebraska’s Aumueller and David Bendheim. Teammates Skip Span and Micah LeMoine fell to Van Impe and Benedikt Lindheim, 8-2, on the No. 3 court. “Overall we need to do a better job of dictating the play,” James said.

“We were outplayed today by Nebraska. At times we were passive and we need to start taking control of points and dictating the match.”

The Redbirds will be in action again Friday as they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the three-day Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships. Illinois State’s home opener will be a double-header against UIC and Western Illinois scheduled for 2:30 p.m., on Jan. 30 at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington.
