Kralis, Redbird Golf Sign Hawn
Dec. 2, 2009
NORMAL,Ill. - Illinois State men's golf head coach Ray Kralis added another weapon to his Missouri Valley Conference contenders. Wils Hawn of Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Ill., signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Redbird men's golf team for the 2010-11 season.
Hawn experienced great success at the high school level. He finished in fifth place at the 2008 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) 2A State Finals and followed that up with a sixth-place finish at the tournament in 2009. In his senior year at Waterloo, Hawn captured six top-three finishes including two victories; one of which he fired a 5-under-par 67 at the Pekin Invitational at the Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin, Ill.
Kralis is pleased to add a golfer who has experienced great success over his career thus far.
"I am extremely excited to add a player of Wils' talent," Kralis said. "I think Wils is going to be a great addition to Redbird golf without a doubt. He's got all the tools to succeed on the college level. He's obviously proven himself in the high school ranks and has had a lot of success in state and national tournaments. He brings the pedigree we are looking for in terms of being use to competing against top competition and going against the best players."
Waterloo High School competed in the Mississippi Valley Conference, where Hawn took the conference title in 2007 and 2008 and finished in second place in 2009. He was also awarded his team's MVP award those three years. He was named the St. Louis Metro East High School Golfer of the Year in 2009. Not only can Hawn get the job done on the golf course, but he has excelled in the classroom as well as he has been on the honor roll all four years of high school.
"Fundamentally he is extremely solid, a very neutral player," Kralis said. "He has a very efficient golf swing and hits it a long way, which is certainly going to help in the transition from high school. Coaches and others who have seen him play and who know about him have nothing but positive things to say about him in the way he handles himself. He just loves the game and I think he's going to be a great addition to the program and I'm really excited to have him on board."
