Men's Golf Rolls to Akron to Play in the Firestone Invitational
Oct. 7, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team will participate in the Akron hosted Firestone Invitational, Oct. 10-11. The tournament will take place at the Firestone Country Club's North Course, a 6,388 yard, par-72 playing surface. The first 36 holes of the tournament will be played Monday, starting with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The invitational will conclude with a final round of 18 holes Tuesday.
Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis believes that his team's recent effort in practice indicates positive change following some early season struggles.
"The whole experience at Firestone is tremendous, and we have the chance to mix it up again against a competitive field featuring schools from the Mid-American Conference, Big Ten and Big 12," Kralis said. "I expect us to be better disciplined in our strategies to set up more confident swings, and while mental toughness will again be a theme, we must make the game much less stressful for ourselves by choosing smarter starting lines. I am confident we are on the improvement road, so we just need to stay patient through the process."
Last season, the Redbirds finished 10th at the Firestone Invitational with senior Eric Meier shooting a four-over-par 220.
Competition at the invitational will include Akron, Ball State, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas State, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Southern Methodist, St. Mary's, Toledo, South Alabama, South Carolina Aiken and Wisconsin.
