NORMAL, Ill. - In the 2009 D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate the Redbirds took everyone by surprise by claiming the team championship and individual title. Illinois State looks to defend its championship titles as the Redbirds will host the 2010 Weibring Intercollegiate this weekend at the Weibring Golf Club.

The field of 18 teams will begin the three round (54 holes) tournament Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The second round will follow shortly after the conclusion of the first round. Play continues Sunday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start for the final round.

Coming off of a second-place finish at the Cardinal Intercollegiate, the Redbirds look forward to defending their home turf.

"Our play so far has increased our confidence and we have learned about ourselves and the mental toughness it takes to compete," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Everyone starts fresh on Saturday, so we know we have another mental battle in front of us. While our familiarity with the golf course and the greens is an advantage, the formula for success stays the same. We have to stay in the present, grow in confidence with our course and mind management, and be mentally tough."

Returning individual champion, senior Jeff Kellen, will lead junior Eric Meier, seniors Will Cullen and Drew North and freshman Wils Hawn in the team competition. Individual contenders include sophomores Parker Freiburg, Ricky Hearden and Ryan Murphy.

"One of our strengths is the contributions from everyone within the group, and everyone has stepped up this year," Kralis said. "We need a strong team effort each round in order to be competitive this week, so I am again counting on a number of Redbirds to step up."
