Meier Named MVC Golfer of the Week

Sept. 23, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - After leading the way for the Illinois State men's golf team at the Cardinal Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday, the Missouri Valley Conference league office named junior Eric Meier as the MVC Golfer of the Week, Thursday.

The week's award is the first of Meier's career as an MVC student-athlete.

"It is a great honor to win my first MVC Golfer of the Week award," Meier said. "The work I have been putting into my game over the last year or so is continuing to pay off and I am seeing more and more results by the day. It is great to see our team starting to come together to play some good golf. If we keep things moving in the right direction we have a chance for a really special year. Our home tournament is coming up real soon and we are all excited to help defend our home turf against a strong field."

The MVC Golfer of the Week award is due to Meier's three-under-par 213 (66-75-72) and fourth-place finish in the 16-school, 83-player field. His performance led the Redbirds to a second-place finish and four-under-par 860 (280-291-289) team effort.

"Eric stepped up big time and set the pace for us by opening the tournament with a score of 66," head coach Ray Kralis said. "It was a breakthrough round and a glimpse of his potential. His 72 in the final round which featured tougher hole locations and windier conditions was also key to the team finishing in second. His under par performance put him in contention to win in a strong field and is certainly deserving of this recognition."

Meier and the men's golf team have a little over a week of preparation before hosting the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the Weibring Golf Club Oct. 2-3. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
