Freiburg Named MVC Golfer of the Week

March 20, 2014

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior Parker Freiburg received Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday. This is the second time Freiburg has received the award, and it marks the fourth-consecutive week that a Redbird has earned the accolade.

"Parker has continued to develop as a player, and it is great to see his effort and commitment rewarded," head coach Ray Kralis said. "He has the physical and emotional set to compete with the best each week, and this provides affirmation of that and more confidence going forward."

Freiburg finished in 11th place on the individual leaderboard at the Seminole Intercollegiate among 73 other individual golfers. Due to weather forecasts, the three-day tournament was forced to be finished in two, with the last 36-holes played Saturday. Instead of seeing it as a disadvantage, Freiburg stepped up his game and carded a 2-under-par in the second round and a 69 in the third to finish with a score of 215 (76-70-69).

Though going up against seven teams in the top-75, three of which are in the top-25, Freiburg's 1-under-par finish helped the Redbirds take ninth place with a team score of 887 (304-289-294). Illinois State was able to defeat Big Ten Conference member Penn State and Big South conference member Winthrop.

The Redbirds will return to competition at the ASU Red Wolf Classic April 7-8, in Jonesboro, Ark.
