Freiburg Named MVC Golfer of the Week

Feb. 26, 2014

ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior Parker Freiburg was named the Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday. This marks the second-straight Redbird to receive the honor. Fellow senior Wils Hawn earned the accolade last week (Feb. 19).

With the two Redbird seniors receiving the honor two weeks in a row, head coach Ray Kralis looks for the accolades to continue to motivate the team.

"Recognition in back-to-back weeks for our two seniors is very rewarding for them and our program," Kralis said. "It validates that a daily commitment to getting better makes a difference on a larger scale"

The Illinois State men's golf team was tied for sixth after the first day of competition at the Snowman Getaway at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. In the third round, Freiburg shot four birdies and three eagles to attain a new personal best of 64. He finished the tournament with a personal-best, three-round total of 207 (75-68-64), and tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Freiburg's 64 helped the Redbird's capture a first place victory with a team score of 849 (298-278-273).

With Freiburg's personal-best along with the contribution of his teammates, Illinois State finished with a team score of 849 (298-278-273), and ahead of Big Ten conference member Indiana, Gonzaga, and Missouri Valley Conference-rival Missouri State.

The Redbirds will travel to Lafayette, La., March 10-11, to compete in the Louisiana Classics. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
