NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State men's golf team will travel to Orlando, Fla. to participate in The Match Play Monday and Tuesday. The 12-team tournament will be held at the par-72, 7,257 yard Watson Course at Reunion Resort.

The Redbirds will begin The Match Play on Monday by facing off against USC Upstate. If they are victorious, they will advance in the tournament bracket to face the winner of Marquette and USF. If USC Upstate takes the first match, the Redbirds will move on to play the loser of Marquette and USF.

Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis is encouraged by his squad’s recent efforts, and looks forward to matching up against quality competition.

“With the preparation we’ve put in, I really think we’re ready to go,” said Kralis. “The Match Play is a nice format for us to kick off the spring, as I feel that we have a group capable of making birdies, which will be necessary to succeed in this format. We’ve got a tough opponent in the first match with USC Upstate, but I feel like we are a better team than what we showed in the fall, and there’s no reason this can’t be the week we display that to the rest of the field.”

Competing for the Redbirds will be senior Eric Meier, juniors Ricky Hearden and Matt Solis, sophomore Wils Hawn and freshman Jordan Fahel. Junior Ryan Murphy will also be making his spring debut.

“I’m excited to get Ryan back in the lineup,” said Kralis. “He worked really hard in the offseason and I’ve seen a lot of positive results. I feel that we are real strong throughout our lineup, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that translates.”

In addition to the teams the Redbirds will see on Monday, the tournament is fielding teams from Central Arkansas, Connecticut, DePaul, Loyala Chicago, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, Villanova and VCU.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
