NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State men's golf head coach Ray Kralis was looking for his team to defend their home turf at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. Kralis got what he asked for as not only did the Redbirds come away with the team championship after firing a 33-over-par 873 (293-286-294), but junior Jeff Kellen was able to take home the individual title with a 1-under-par 209 (72-68-69).

"I'm really pleased with the win," Kralis said. "I couldn't be happier for Jeff, he's worked hard, he's a great player and it's nice to see him breakout like that. That's been a positive of the team all year, different people stepping up and contributing and I thought it was a key win for us. It's nice to represent and get that title back here in our house."

Senior Kyle Bragg rebounded from a tough finish at the Kansas invitational to tie for fifth place with a 9-over-par 219 (74-73-72). Sophomore Eric Meier continued his solid play firing an 11-over-par 221 (73-70-78) as he tied for eighth place. Junior Will Cullen posted a 14-over-par 224 (74-75-75) to put him in a tie for 13th place. Senior Tommy Bliefnick carded a 21-over-par 231 (75-76-80) as he finished tied for 44th place.

Competing as individuals, freshman Ryan Murphy began his collegiate career in the right direction as he finished tied for 22nd place after firing a 17-over-par 227 (75-75-77). Junior Drew North also tied for 22nd place with a 17-over-par 227 (78-73-76). Senior Joe Emerich shot a 20-over-par 230 (79-75-76) and was tied for 39th place. Freshman Ricky Hearden finished tied for 50th place as he posted a 23-over-par 233 (76-76-81). Freshman Matt Hageman had to withdraw from the competition after suffering an injury in the third round.



Western Illinois finished runner up to the Redbirds after posting a 48-over-par 888 (301-295-292). Missouri - Kansas City and Detroit Mercy tied for third place after each carded a 65-over-par 905.

Brian Scott of Western Illinois finished in second place with a 5-over-par 215 (72-72-71). Thomas Greene of Loyola Chicago and David Byrne of Detroit Mercy tied for third place after posting an 8-over-par 218.

The Redbirds will wrap up their fall season Oct. 26-27 at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The two-day tournament will be held at the New Mexico State University GC.
