AKRON, Ohio - The Illinois State men's golf team finished in 15th place out of a field of 17 at the Firestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club's North Course in Akron, Ohio. The Redbirds recorded a final score of 887 (299-293-295) at the par-72, 7,125 yard course. Indiana (289-283-282) and St. Mary's College (294-279-281) were co-champions of the tournament, finishing with a team score of 854.

Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis believes that his squad showed substantial effort and is learning valuable lessons going forward.

"Despite falling back in the standings, I did see some resiliency from the guys, and I know they competed hard today," Kralis said. "It is not a question of effort. This season's challenging start makes it easy to press, which doesn't always pay off in this game. We are learning some tough lessons right now and need to apply those as we go forward."

Finishing tied for 34th overall, senior Eric Meier recorded an Illinois State best score of 220 (75-74-71). Junior Ricky Hearden ended play with a final tally of 223 (75-73-75), while junior Matt Solis continued solid play after a rough first round to finish with a score of 226 (82-72-72). Sophomore Wils Hawn (73-74-80) and freshman Jordan Fahel (76-74-77) both carded a cumulative score of 227.

The Redbirds will return to the links on Monday, Oct. 17, when they begin play at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate Championship in Overland Park, Kan. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
