Men's Golf Completes Day One at the Jackrabbit Invitational

March 11, 2013

PRIMM, Nev. - Senior Ricky Hearden led the Illinois State men's golf team through the first day of play at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev., Monday. The Redbirds finished day one tied for ninth place, firing a team score of 297. After the first round, Hearden tallied a 3-under-par 69, putting him in a tie for fifth place. The tournament started late on Monday due to frost on the course and did not finish the second round.

Although play began with solid performances by senior Hearden, and freshman Tyler Gentilella, inconsistency cost the Redbirds a higher ranking going into the final day.

"The conditions were perfect for scoring today, and Ricky took advantage with a solid 69 in the opening round," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Tyler's finish was also big, as he picked up three shots with a birdie and an eagle to close round one at even par. It was disappointing to leave those scores stranded knowing the potential of this team, and we need to be more consistent from top to bottom and round to round."

Gentilella, who finished three strokes behind Hearden, fired a score of par (72), which put him in a tie for 18th place, heading into the final day of play. Junior Parker Freiburg carded a day one score of 76, while senior Matt Solis and junior Wils Hawn each carded a first round score of 80.

Competing as individuals, sophomore Josh Edison tallied a score of 74, while freshman Tyler Pope-Ferguson shot a day one score of 80.

Air Force leads the field with a 12-under-par 276, while Idaho is second with a team score of 278. South Dakota State rounds out the top-three teams with a score of 288.

The Redbirds will be back on the course Tuesday to complete the second round of play, before playing the final round. Play will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CST). Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
