Redbirds Tied for Sixth Place After Day One of Snowman Getaway
Feb. 24, 2014
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -
With a large, competitive field and a strong team effort in the second round, the Illinois State men's golf team is tied for sixth place after the first two rounds of the Snowman Getaway at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. Led by Wils Hawn and after great rounds by Jordan Fahel and Parker Freiburg, the Redbirds finished the day with an overall team score of 576 (298-278).
Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the Redbird's performance and is confident is his squad's performance Tuesday.
"The conditions were perfect, and confidence was high following last week and the practice round," Kralis said. "Our expectations, relative to the possibilities, probably led to us getting in our own way and pressing a bit in the opening round. While the first round total wasn't anywhere near our capabilities, I was pleased to see the team bounce back in such strong fashion in round two. We got key rounds from Wils, Jordan and Parker to lead the way and move us up the leaderboard. I am glad we have 18 holes left to go and am confident we will get a strong team effort Tuesday."
After shooting an eagle on his second hole of the day, Hawn finished with an overall score of 141 (72-69) and is tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard. With a low- round personal-best of 68 by Fahel and a tied-personal best of 68 by Freiburg, both ended the first two rounds tied for 21st with a score of 141 (75-68)(75-68). Tyler Gentilella came back in the second round to finish the day with a 149 (76-73), while Kyle Meihofer finished with a 156 (79-77).
Air Force currently leads the field with a team score of 563 (276-287), while Missouri-Kansas City is four strokes behind with a 567 (285-282). Ryan McCormick from St. John's sits in first with a 132 (64-68), followed by Arizona State's Blake Cannon, who finished with a 134 (68-66).
