ST. LOUIS - Illinois State redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Winkler and sophomore transfer defensive end David Perkins each made immediate impacts in their first season with the Redbirds, and their efforts were recognized Tuesday when both were named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team.

With its two selections, the Illinois State football program has had at least two players selected for the league's all-newcomer team each year since 2004. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers are all eligible to be selected to the squad by a vote of the conference's head coaches, sports information directors and media.

Winkler was thrust into action after an injury to the team's starting quarterback in the second game of the year at Eastern Illinois. The Frankfort, Ill., native went on to start the final nine games of the year and completed 127-of-217 pass attempts (58.5 percent) for 1,637 yards and 12 touchdowns. Winkler ranked fourth in the MVFC with a pass efficiency rating of 132.8, and he completed 10 passes of over 30 yards or more.

Perkins transferred to Illinois State from Ohio State prior to the 2013 campaign and went on to play in all 11 games for the Redbirds at defensive end. The South Bend, Ind., native finished the season with 21 tackles, including 14 solo stops, and tied for the team lead with four sacks. Perkins also added five tackles-for-loss, forced a team-high three fumbles, broke up two passes and was credited with three quarterback hurries. He burst onto the scene when he recorded 2.5 sacks and a career-high six tackles in a win over Abilene Christian and later followed that up with a sack and forced a fumble in a win against Indiana State.
