College Sporting News Names Allen National All-Star
Nov. 5, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior defensive back Tevin Allen was selected as one of five College Sporting News All-Stars for games played on Nov. 2, as announced by the organization Tuesday.
He is the second Missouri Valley Football Conference player to earn National Player of the Week Honors for his performance last Saturday, joining running back Martin Ruiz of Youngstown State, who was selected as co-Freshman of the Week by The Sports Network. The national honor is the first for Allen in his career at ISU and the first for a Redbird player this season.
Allen was previously named the MVFC co-Defensive Player of the Week for his work in ISU's 13-3 victory over UNI on Saturday, and shared the weekly honor with Missouri State's Jeremy Springer. In his first career start at safety, the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native finished the game with a career-high eight tackles, all of which were solo stops, and added a tackle-for-loss, his second interception of the season and returned a fumble 17 yards for a touchdown. Late in the first quarter, Allen scooped up a failed lateral attempt by the Panthers and raced to the end zone for his first career score.
He also added his second interception of the season in the second quarter and downed a punt at the UNI one yard line late in the fourth quarter to cap off a stellar day. Allen and the rest of the stingy Redbird defense allowed a season-low three points and just 211 yards of total offense to UNI in the 13-3 victory over the Panthers.
Allen and the Redbirds head to Fargo, N.D., on Saturday to take on the two-time defending FCS National Champions North Dakota State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the FargoDome, with the game broadcast live on Fox College Sports Pacific and Fox Sports North.
