Allen Tabbed As Valley Football Co-Player of the Week
Nov. 3, 2013
ST. LOUIS - In his first career start at safety, Illinois State junior defensive back Tevin Allen played the best game of his career and helped lead the Redbirds to a 13-3 win over Northern Iowa Saturday. For his efforts, Allen was named the co-Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week by the league office Sunday.
Allen shared the weekly honor with Missouri State's Jeremy Springer, who recorded a pair of interceptions and returned one 51 yards for a touchdown in the Bears' 49-7 decision over Indiana State. The weekly award is the first for Allen in his career at ISU and the third for a Redbird player this year. Last week, defensive tackle Bradon Prate was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week and offensive lineman Rocco Ammons was named the MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Allen, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native, finished the game with a career-high eight tackles, all of which were solo stops, and added a tackle-for-loss, his second interception of the season and returned a fumble 17 yards for a touchdown. Late in the first quarter, Allen scooped up a failed lateral attempt by the Panthers and raced to the end zone for his first career score.
He also added his second interception of the season in the second quarter and downed a punt at the UNI one yard line late in the fourth quarter to cap off a stellar day. Allen and the rest of the stingy Redbird defense allowed a season-low three points and just 211 yards of total offense to UNI in the 13-3 victory over the Panthers.
Allen and the Redbirds head to Fargo, N.D., this weekend to take on the two-time defending FCS National Champions North Dakota State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the FargoDome, with the game broadcast live on Fox College Sports Pacific and Fox Sports North.
