Ammons Named Valley Football Offensive Lineman of the Week
Oct. 28, 2013
ST. LOUIS - The Illinois State offensive line has led the way for a 100-yard rusher the past four weeks and one of its members was recognized for that accomplishment Monday, when right guard Rocco Ammons was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week by the league office.
The honor is the first for Ammons in his career at ISU and the second MVFC weekly award for a Redbird player this week. Ammons joins teammate Bradon Prate, who was named the MVFC Defensive Player of the Week Sunday.
Ammons had a stellar day in helping Illinois State improve to 4-0 at Hancock Stadium with a win over South Dakota Saturday. The Warrenville, Ill., native graded out at 95 percent and led the way for running back Marshaun Coprich, who rushed for 108 yards on a career-high 34 carries against the Coyotes.
The 100-plus rushing yard performance was the fourth in a row for Coprich, making him the first ISU running back to have four 100-plus yard performances in a row since the 2007 season. Ammons also helped protect redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Winkler, who led the Redbirds to a win with a career-best three touchdown passes, despite completing just nine passes on the day.
Ammons and the Redbirds wrap up a three-game home stand next Saturday, when they host UNI in the home finale on Senior Day at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago, with Kurt Pegler and Boomer Grigsby on the call.
