Frierson Named Valley Football Newcomer of the Week
Oct. 16, 2011
ST. LOUIS - After leading the Illinois State defensive attack in the team's 28-3 victory over No. 14 South Dakota, junior linebacker Evan Frierson was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Newcomer of the Week by the league office Sunday.
The weekly honor is the first for the Illinois transfer in his first season at Illinois State. The Washington, D.C., native joins freshman cornerback Mike Banks as winners of the league's newcomer of the week award this season and senior offensive lineman Nick Bledsoe as a weekly honoree.
Frierson led the way for the Redbird defense that allowed the Coyotes just 108 yards of total offense in the team's Homecoming win Saturday at Hancock Stadium. He set new career highs with three sacks and four tackles-for-loss against the Coyotes and finished the game with a team-leading eight tackles, including seven solo stops. In the game, Frierson and the rest of the Redbirds allowed just three yards rushing and 10 yards total to USD in the second half and USD quarterback Dante Warren completed just five passes during the game while being sacked a total of six times.
In seven games played this season, Frierson leads the Redbirds with 12 tackles-for-loss and ranks second on the team with six sacks and 44 total tackles. He has recorded at least one tackle-for-loss in six of the team's seven games and has recorded a sack in four separate games, including four in the last two games.
Illinois State will return to action Saturday, Oct. 22, at Hancock Stadium against the nationally-ranked Indiana State Sycamores, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
