Student Seating Announced For Newly Renovated Hancock Stadium

September 17, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - The newly renovated Hancock Stadium will have a new larger student seating section beginning with the 2013 season. Sections 121-123 on the Westside of Hancock Stadium will now serve as the official student section of Hancock Stadium.

Approximately 3,600 general admission and Red Alert member seats will be available, with overflow seating located at the South end zone, next to the Illinois State Big Red Marching Machine. ISU head football coach Brock Spack thinks having the students in one area behind the visitors’ bench will contribute to Hancock Stadiums’ loud game day atmosphere.

“The energy and game atmosphere created by the students is important for our home field advantage,” Coach Spack said. “With the help of our students, Hancock Stadium will be one of the toughest places to play in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Historically, student seating had been on the Eastside of the stadium and in the South end zone; however, those seats have been torn down as part of the stadium renovation.

To determine the best place for the student seating section, Illinois State Athletics worked with several members of the campus community, including the Student Government Association, University Programming Board, the Association of Residence Halls, Greek fraternity and sorority representatives and ISU’s Student Board of Trustees member, Aaron VonQualen.

“When deciding where to allocate student seating last spring, Athletics administration wanted input from the student leaders on campus. We held a meeting and discussed the options with those leaders and asked for their input; both student and athletics felt it was a very productive process,” explained Director of Athletics Larry Lyons. “There are now more student seats than ever before, which adds to the importance for Red Alert and the student body to attend the games and fill those seats.”

Along the same lines as Coach Spack, VonQualen agrees the students will make an impact on the game day atmosphere. “Both Redbird Athletics and student leaders agreed that students sitting on the Westside bleachers will give the students a better view of the game and help create an electric environment at our football games,” VonQualen said. “This louder environment will give our team the home field advantage they deserve.”

Illinois State’s first home game in the refurbished Hancock Stadium will take place Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m., as the Redbirds host Abilene Christian.
