Redbirds Ranked In Top 20 In Both National FCS Polls
Sep 2, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Despite a season-opening loss to Mid-American Conference and Football Bowl Subdivision foe Ball State last Thursday, the Illinois State football team remained ranked in both major Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) polls announced Monday. The Redbirds were ranked No. 17 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 19 in The Sports Network FCS Top 25.
Illinois State moved down several spots in both polls after the loss to Ball State, but stayed in the Top 20 in the country. The Redbirds were previously ranked No. 13 in The Sports Network and No. 10 in the FCS Coaches preseason polls. ISU has now been ranked in 22-consecutive polls by the The Sports Network, dating back to the 2011 season. Fellow MVFC member and back-to-back national champion North Dakota State was a unanimous No. 1 selection in the FCS Coaches Poll and collected 145 of the 152 first-place votes in the TSN poll to remain the decisive top team in the country. The Bison rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to a 24-21 win over Kansas State, and were one of eight FCS teams that picked up wins over FBS programs on opening weekend.
The Redbirds and Bison were also joined in the polls by three other MVFC members. South Dakota State stayed in the Top 10 in both polls, as they were selected No. 6 in the TSN poll and picked No. 7 by the coaches. Northern Iowa catapulted into the Top 10 in both polls and ranked No. 9 in both polls, after the Panthers defeated in-state rival Iowa State by a score of 28-20. Youngstown State rounds out the group, after it just stayed in the coaches' poll in the No. 25 spot.
Illinois State has a bye week coming up, before it heads to Charleston, Ill., for a Sept. 14 match up against nationally-ranked Eastern Illinois in the Mid-America Classic. The Panthers moved up seven spots to No. 14 in the TSN poll, after its 40-19 victory over San Diego State, and the coaches ranked them No. 16 on Monday.
