NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State defensive tackle Eric Brunner was recognized Tuesday for his dedication on the field and in the classroom, when he was named the Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship recipient for the 2011-12 academic year. GoRedbirds.com:
Brunner is the fourth recipient of the endowment, which was established in 2008 by the Brock family. Last year, Brunner was named the recipient of the W.F. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship at ISU.
The Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship is presented annually to a Redbird male student-athlete who carries at least a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA). Brock lived in Bloomington, Ill., for 50 years and was a dedicated community leader and businessman. Throughout his life, he maintained close relationships with several Illinois State head coaches and was a loyal friend of Redbird Athletics.
"Eric is not only a top-notch football player and one of the best at his position in the conference, but he is also a fantastic student," ISU football head coach Brock Spack said. "As a coach, I appreciate his no-nonsense approach to being a student-athlete. He knows what he needs to get done on the field and in the classroom and goes about it the right way. He represents everything this scholarship is about, and we feel he represents everything you could want in a collegiate football student-athlete."
A 2010 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference First-Team selection, Brunner started all 11 games at defensive tackle and ranked fifth on the team with a career-high 53 tackles, including 23 solo stops. The Greendale, Wis., native led the team with four sacks and 9.5 tackles-for-loss, both career-highs, and was credited with two quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery.
Brunner also earned several accolades for his academic prowess as well. He was named a MVFC All-Academic First Team honoree and was selected to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District V Team. He capped off the year by being named to the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team.
"It's an honor to receive this year's Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship," Brunner said. "This endowment recognizes not only hard work on the field, but also on the academic side of things. I pride myself on my work ethic and I am grateful that coach Spack and the Brock family recognize and appreciate that hard work. Mr. Brock was longtime fan and friend to ISU and I am proud to be associated with a scholarship named in his honor."
