PHILADELPHIA - Illinois State senior defensive end Colton Underwood posted one of the best defensive seasons in Redbird football history last year and heads into the 2013 season as one of the 20 nominees on the 2013 Buck Buchanan Award Watch List, which was announced Thursday by The Sports Network.

Underwood is one of seven returning finalists for the 19th annual award, which is presented by The Sports Network to the outstanding defensive player in the FCS following the regular season. He finished sixth in the 2012 Buchanan Award voting, the highest among the returnees.

Underwood is the fifth Redbird player to be named to the prestigious list and the fourth to appear on the list in back-to-back seasons. Illinois State Percy Family Hall of Fame member and former All-American linebacker Boomer Grigsby was a three-time finalist for the award from 2002-04, finishing as runner-up in 2003 to current Minnesota Vikings star Jared Allen. Defensive end Brent Hawkins and linebacker Cameron Siskowic were both finalists in 2005, finishing second and 13th respectively, and Siskowic finished fifth in the voting the following year in 2006.

During the 2012 season, Underwood played in all 13 games for the Redbirds and led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in sacks (10.5) and tackles-for-loss (19.5) and ranked second on the team with 95 total tackles on the way to being named a First-Team All-MVFC selection. Those numbers also earned him First-Team All-America honors by The Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Associated Press and The Sports Network. The Washington, Ill., native was also a College Sporting News 2012 Fabulous Fifty FCS All-America Team member and was given the 2012 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS Defensive End Award.

The Buchanan Award Watch List can undergo revision during the 2013 season. Ballots will be sent to a panel of about 175 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries following the regular season. The winner will be invited to The Sports Network FCS Awards Presentation on Dec. 16.

Past Buchanan Award recipients include two-time winner Dexter Coakley, Allen, Rashean Mathis, Kroy Biermann and Montana State defensive end Caleb Schreibeis last season.
