NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack filled the open spot on his coaching staff Thursday, when he announced the hiring of assistant coach Jake Schoonover.

Schoonover is no stranger to the Illinois State football program. In 2009, he served as a volunteer assistant coach working with the Redbird offensive line and wide receivers on Spack's first staff at ISU. Spack is looking forward to working with Schoonover and having some more help coaching the defense.

"We are very excited to add Jake to our coaching staff," Spack said. "It's great to have him back with the program, after he volunteered here two years ago in our first season at ISU. I was looking for a coach that could come in and help me with the linebackers and really all facets of the defense. Jake's a hard-working, young coach, and I think we will make a good team working with the linebackers."

Schoonover comes to Illinois State, after spending one season on the Illinois Wesleyan coaching staff working with the defensive backs for head coach Norm Eash. Schoonover also assisted with special teams duties and served as the junior varsity team's defensive coordinator, leading them to a 6-0 record with three shutouts.

After a year across town working with the Titans, Schoonover is pleased to be back at ISU working with a coaching staff and players he is familiar with.

"I'm excited to be back at Illinois State working with coach Spack and the rest of the staff," Schoonover said. "It's great to have the opportunity to work with the linebackers, having played there for my entire career in college and also in arena ball. I couldn't ask for a better coach to work with other than coach Spack, who has been a linebackers coach for his entire career. I just want to soak up as much experience as I can and help this program get to the next level where it should be."

Schoonover was the defensive ends coach at his alma mater, Missouri Western State, for a season before working with the Redbirds in 2009. During his career at Missouri Western State, Schoonover started in 30 games at linebacker and was a team captain for the Griffons. Following his collegiate career, he played linebacker and wide receiver in 2008 and 2009 for the arena league Peoria Pirates, serving as team captain in 2009.

Schoonover earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from MWSU in 2008 and received a master's degree in 2010 from American Public University. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
