NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack awarded sophomore Jordan Neukirch the W.E. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year, for his dedication on the field of play and in the classroom.

The W.E. Ruebush (REW-bush) Endowed Scholarship is presented annually to a Redbird football player who carries at least a 3.2 GPA. The scholarship was established on October 22, 2005, by the W.E. Ruebush Foundation, which was funded to provide journalism and athletic scholarships. In addition to the scholarship at Illinois State, the foundation has also funded higher education awards at Iowa and Florida.

The scholarship is named for the former Illinois State football team captain in 1932. Ruebush, who died in 1991, lettered four years as a center on the Redbird football team, before graduating in 1932. He also lettered two seasons in baseball and basketball and was active in the Gamma Phi Circus, the "N" Club, band and orchestra, Commerce Club, Varsity Club and the Philadelphian Debate Society.

"Jordan is a very hard worker, both on the field and in the classroom," Spack said. "He always has a smile on his face, is ready to get the job done and is an extremely tough competitor. Jordan is the type of student-athlete we look to recruit in our program and really embodies what it means to be a student-athlete here at Illinois State. We are proud of his accomplishments and look forward to three more seasons with him on the field."

Neukirch played in all 11 games for the Redbirds in 2010 as the team's primary H-back, which is a hybrid between a fullback and a tight end. The Algonquin, Ill., native caught four passes for 31 yards on the season, with a long of 21 yards against Northwestern, and led the team with 14 tackles on special teams, including 12 on the kickoff coverage team. He also helped lead the way for the Redbird running game, which averaged 131 yards per game. He holds a 3.36 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in business administration.

"I'm very humbled and honored to be recognized with the W.E. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship," Neukirch said. "It means a lot to me that coach Spack and the W.E. Ruebush Foundation think highly of me and wanted to recognize my hard work in the classroom and on the field. This type of recognition keeps me motivated to make sure I'm working towards achieving my goals at ISU and helping my team and coaches succeed."
