ISU Men's Basketball Tabbed Sixth at Valley Media Day
Oct. 26, 2010
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois State men's basketball team was predicted to finish sixth in the 2010-11 Missouri Valley Conference race with 165 votes, according to the annual media day poll as compiled by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and media.
The No. 6 standing in the preseason poll is the lowest the Redbirds have been projected in head coach Tim Jankovich's tenure. However with the three top scorers from last season's ISU team gone to graduation, the placement wasn't a total surprise. It is the lowest preseason ranking since the 2006-07 season, when the Redbirds were selected to finish ninth.
The Redbirds have only been picked sixth in the preseason Valley poll one other time in Illinois State's history. In 1994-95, ISU was selected sixth in the league poll, but finished the season in third place.
Wichita State is the league's preseason favorite with 382 votes, including 33 first-place tallies. Missouri State was picked second with 313 votes, Northern Iowa was third with 289, Creighton fourth at 282 and Bradley fifth with 262 votes. Missouri State (1), Northern Iowa (3) and Bradley (2) also received first-place votes in addition to Wichita State.
Indiana State (136), Drake (121), Southern Illinois (120) and Evansville (73) were picked to finish seventh through 10th, respectively.
In addition, the preseason all-conference team was also released. For the first time since 2006-07, the Redbirds did not have a single individual on the all-league preseason team or an honorable mention selection.
