Men's Basketball to Participate in 2014 Paradise Jam

Feb. 3, 2014

SHORELINE, Wash. - Illinois State will join Clemson, Gardner-Webb, LSU, Nevada, Old Dominion, Seton Hall and Weber State in the 2014 Ezybonds Global Payments U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, held on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Nov. 21-24, 2014. The men's tournament field was released Monday by promoter Basketball Travelers Inc.

"I'm very excited about participating in the 2014 Paradise Jam," Illinois State head coach Dan Muller said. "This will be a great trip for our fans to come support our team as we play against some high-level competition."

All three of ISU's games in the four-day tournament will be held at the 4,000-seat UVI Sports and Fitness Center at the University of the Virgin Islands during the week before Thanksgiving.

While the tournament's bracket will be determined after the current college basketball season concludes, Illinois State has the potential to face opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) (Clemson), the Southeastern Conference (SEC) (LSU) and/or the BIG EAST (Seton Hall).

The annual Paradise Jam began in 2001, with Maryland winning the 2013 title. Some of the 2014 Paradise Jam games will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network, and the remaining contests can be seen live online, in high definition.

Illinois State has never faced five out of the seven potential Paradise Jam opponents, with the Redbirds previously playing Clemson and Weber State each once before. ISU fell to Clemson, 67-56, Dec. 19, 1980, but defeated Weber State, 74-70, Nov. 16, 2001.

This year's tournament features two Paradise Jam alumni teams. Clemson has been to the islands twice before, placing second in inaugural men's tournament in 2001 and third in 2010. Old Dominion fell just short of a championship in 2005, losing to Wisconsin in the title game.
