Odiakosa, Redbirds Power Past Redhawks 93-53

NORMAL, Ill. - Dinma Odiakosa brought the Redbird Arena crowd to their feet with a rim-bending dunk in the second half of Saturday night's Basketball Travelers Classic, part of a career-best 19 points as Illinois State powered its way to a 93-53 win over Southeast Missouri State on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. The 40-point margin was ISU's widest victory since beating Indiana State, 108-58, on Jan. 16, 1997.
Odiakosa and teammate Osiris Eldridge led all scorers as the Redbirds (5-0) won their fifth-consecutive game to start the 2009 season. Odiakosa made 8-of-10 from the field and also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to help ISU out-rebound the Redhawks (1-5) 41-22. Eldridge made six of his eight field goal attempts, including three from beyond the three-point line, as the Redbirds shot a season-best 60.4 percent (32-of-53) from the field. Tony Lewis (15), Austin Hill (13), and Jackie Carmichael (10) also scored in double figures and set new career-highs.
The lead changed hands four times and the game saw five ties in the opening period - the last at 20 with 6:12 to play - before Illinois State closed the half on a 13-4 run. Eldridge led all scorers in the first half with 12 points and the Redbirds got eight points and five rebounds from Odiakosa.
Illinois State continued to roll in the second half, outscoring the Redhawks 28-6 in the first nine minutes while doubling SEMO's score. Odiakosa had 11 of Illinois State's points during the strong second half start and Austin Hill's three-pointer at 11:13 gave the Redbirds a 61-30 edge. Nine different Redbirds scored and 12 saw action as the team pushed its lead to 40 by the end of the game.
Anthony Allison led the Redhawks with a career-best 13 points. Sam Pearson added seven points and Cameron Butler had six points and a team-best six rebounds in the loss. The Redhawks committed 21 turnovers that led to 29 Illinois State points. The Redhawks also had six shot attempts blocked and finished 38.5 percent (20-for-52) from the field.
Southeast Missouri State will take on Norfolk State at 1 p.m. as play at the Basketball Travelers Classic concludes Sunday at Redbird Arena. Illinois State will look to make it six consecutive wins when they match-up with St. Bonaventure at 3:35 p.m.
