Camp's Summer Performance Recognized by Baseball America
Sept. 1, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State sophomore pitcher Ryan Camp was tabbed as the No. 3 prospect in the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League (CGL) and was one of the top 220 college prospects on Baseball America's annual summer prospect list released by the publication Tuesday.
Camp, a right-hander from Mapleton, Ill., started the 2009 Joe Branzell All-Star Game for the CGL against the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League All-Stars, and helped the Vienna Senators claim the CGL crown. Camp went 5-0 with a 2.74 ERA in 13 games, including seven as a starter.
"I figured out how to throw a slider and have been more consistent in the strike zone," Camp said shortly after his All-Star appearance. "The key is I'm throwing to wood bats - it's a lot harder to hit a baseball with a wood bat. It's a little easier to pitch to contact and I'm able to get more guys out. I was talking to our pitching coach about a slider and have been messing around with it while playing catch. I found something I was comfortable with and could throw for strikes."
Camp, a weekend starter for the Redbirds while earning All-Missouri Valley Conference Honorable Mention honors in 2009, struck out 44 in 42.2 innings and held opposing batters to a .210 clip. Camp joined Illinois State and Vienna teammates Ryan Court and Ty Weisemeyer in helping the Senators to an impressive 30-9 mark in league play and a No. 15 national ranking in PG Crosschecker's final summer league poll.
Camp is one of the three returning weekend starters for Illinois State, which qualified for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and posted a winning record for the first time since 2001. His Friday night win against Wichita State (April 3) at Eck Stadium helped the Redbirds snap a 25-game road losing streak to the Shockers
Camp and the rest of the Redbirds will look to keep the momentum going under new head coach Mark Kingston when Illinois State begins fall team practices on September 15.
