Redbirds Win Rain-Shortened Contest Over James Madison, 5-0
March 12, 2010
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Kevin Tokarski finished a home-run away from the cycle and Corey Maines threw six shutout innings as the Redbirds rolled to a rain-shortened, 5-0 win over James Madison to begin play at the Kennel Club Classic at Harmon Stadium.
Tokarski went 3-for-3 with a single, double and a triple, and also drove in and scored a run, while helping the Redbirds (5-7) snap a five-game losing streak. Maines struck out three and scattered five hits over six innings, and earned his second win of the season after the game was called following an hour long rain delay and lingering lightning.
The Redbirds clubbed 10 hits off of James Madison (3-7) starter Kyle Hoffman, including Tokarski's double to lead off the bottom of the first. He later scored the eventual game-winning run on a single by Zach Amrein. It was Amrein's team-best 18th RBI of the season.
Illinois State added another run in the bottom of the second when Tokarski tripled in Josh Colon with two outs, and Anthony Ruffolo scored on a passed ball in the third before Ryan Court drove Jake Thornton to make it 4-0 after three innings. Court, who finished the game 2-for-3, finished the game with two RBI. Thornton was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Johnny Bladel had two hits for the Dukes, who were defeated 22-19 by North Florida in an earlier game Friday. James Madison stranded seven base runners in the contest against Illinois State.
The Redbirds match-up with tournament-host North Florida Saturday at noon, before closing the Kennel Club Classic and the team's spring break trip against James Madison at 10 a.m. Sunday.
