March 10, 2009
SAN ANTONIO - Collin Salzenstein reached base four times and scored a pair of runs for Illinois State but a five-run inning and 12 hits propelled Texas-San Antonio to a 11-6 win over the Redbirds at Roadrunner Field Tuesday.
Salzenstein, who collected four hits in Sunday's win over Western Michigan, continued to swing a hot bat at the top of the lineup going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and reaching on an error. Salzenstein also drove in a run for Illinois State (4-5). Tyler McNeely hit his first career home run in the seventh and finished 1-for-4.
Three Illinois State pitchers combined to hit seven UTSA (9-4) batters and the staff allowed 12 hits. Illinois State held a 3-1 advantage behind starter Quinn Ewert going into the bottom of the fourth but Ewert plunked the first two batters of the inning and surrendered three extra-base hits, including two home runs. The Roadrunners pushed plated five runs in the fourth and never relinquished the lead.
Matt Werderitch was touched for a run in two innings of relief and Jake Wielebnicki gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth, despite getting all six of his outs on strikeouts over the final two innings of the game. Ewert hit three batters and both Redbird relievers hit two batters each.
Marc Gomez (1-0) earned the win for UTSA after striking out five and giving up five hits in five innings. Michael Rockett led the Roadrunner offense with three hits, and Marshal Davis, Lance Brown and Ryan Rummel each collected two hits. Rummel and Davis hit home runs in the win.
Illinois State will begin the Notre Dame Tournament against Trinity at Wolf Stadium at 6 p.m. Wednesday, and will play Notre Dame (March 12) and Texas-Pan American (March 13-14) in round-robin play.
