NORMAL, Ill.—The Illinois State men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by Drake at the Blank Park Golf Course.

The men’s 8K is set to start at 10:30 a.m., while the women’s 5K will follow at 11:30 a.m.

After winning back-to-back Valley championships, being tabbed preseason favorites and placing second at the Country Financial Illinois State Intercollegiate, the ISU women’s team has been picked to finish second behind Bradley in the pre-championship poll.

The women’s team received a total of 89 points, tallying four first-place votes, while Bradley notched the first-place spot with 93 points and six first-place votes.

The Redbird women will be paced by senior co-captain Rachael Brewer, as she holds the third-best Valley 5K time at 17:27. Brewer will look to continue her successful cross country slate to earn her second career All-Conference honor. Kim Christensen and Kelly McShea also look to repeat their 2012 championship performance to earn another All-Valley title. Kristen Zillmer and Haley Goers will seek to round out the Redbird scoring lineup.

Ellen Devereux, Kaley Ummel and Haley Verbeke will also compete this Saturday.

On the men’s side, Illinois State was picked to finish third with 59 total points. Southern Illinois was favored to win the men’s title with 80 points and eight first-place votes, while Bradley was tabbed to finish second with 60 points and one first-place vote.

After breaking the ISU men’s 8,000-meter record, Ryan Rutherford will pace the Redbirds, looking for not only another all-conference honor, but an individual title as well. Jeff Bajema, Dave Eckhart, Tyler Morse, and Sean Senf will look to round out the Redbird scoring lineup.

Aidan Askin, Ryan Bybee and Paul Steeno are also set to toe the starting line.
