NORMAL, Ill. - For the third consecutive year, the Illinois State men's and women's cross country teams will host a distance camp in an effort to provide instruction to all genders entering grades 6-12.

The camp will run from July 20-23 and will be led by the 2011 and 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year Jeff Bovee, his staff, Redbird runners and will feature 2004 U.S. Olympian Tim Broe. Broe is a 10-time U.S. Champion and currently coaches at the professional level.

Bovee was instrumental in the development of professional runner and former Redbird, Aisha Praught, who signed a contract with Nike in 2012 to run for the Oregon Track Club. He has coached 13 Valley individual champions, a NJCAA National Cross Country Champion and was an All-Pac-10 performer at Arizona. Bovee has earned two Valley titles to go along with his Coach of the Year accolades. Most recently, the men’s and women’s cross country teams finished third in a tight 2013 MVC campaign. The men’s squad captured a 15th-place finish in a tough Midwest regional, while the women’s team finished 11th.

The clinics will cover a variety of topics, including nutrition, training methodology, running mechanics, racing tactics, team building, strength training and injury prevention. In addition, the camp will utilize a wide-array of facilities optimal for distance runners, including the ISU Cross Country Course at the Weibring Golf Club (the site of the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships and the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference Championships), the Redbird Track & Field Complex, Maxwell Park, the trails at Lake Evergreen and the Constitution Trail; all of which are put to use by the Redbird men's and women's distance crews on a daily basis.

Individual and team instruction from the ISU coaching staff, visiting high school and college coaches, as well as collegiate student-athletes will take place throughout the duration of the camp. A three-mile race at Maxwell Park (the site of the IESA Cross Country Championships and several IHSA Sectional Cross Country Meets), will conclude the camp on the final day.

The cost of $370 for an individual includes instruction, meals, overnight housing on the ISU campus and a T-shirt. The price reduces to $350 for individuals signing up with a group of four or more from the same team (must be same gender), $300 for an individual who commutes to the camp and $275 for individuals signing up with a group of four or more from the same team (must be same gender) who commute to the camp daily.

Registration is now open and will close Friday, June 20, at which point a $100 deposit is required. A fee of $35 will be added for registrations received after July 4.
