ISU Track & Field Athletes Qualify for NCAA West Regional

INDIANAPOLIS - A total of 17 Illinois State track team members have qualified for the NCAA West Regional scheduled to take place May 26-28, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The meet is one of two preliminary meets in which athletes will compete for a spot in the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa.
The women's team will send a large group to the West Regional and a couple of those student-athletes will be competing in multiple events. Thrower Brittany Smith has qualified to compete in the shot put, hammer throw and discus events and ranks in the top-20 in the region in each event. Smith heads in ranked 18th in the shot put (51-11.25) and the discus (172-01) and holds the eighth-best mark in the region (206-03) in the hammer throw, which is a school record and personal-best. Smith will be joined in the shot put competition by Tori Ziegler, who heads into the meet ranked 15th with a distance of 52-02.50, a personal-best.
Leigh Petranoff, the three-time defending Missouri Valley Conference champion in the javelin, and defending Valley champion in the high jump, Amanda Albrecht round out a strong group of field competitors for the Redbirds. Petranoff heads into the meet ranked 17th in the region with a mark of 160-04. Albrecht goes into the regional with a personal-best mark of 5-09.75, which places her 23rd.
On the track, Sade Sealy headlines a strong group of runners for ISU. Sealy, who swept the 400-meter titles in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in the Valley in 2010 and 2011, has qualified to compete in both the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 53.48 and is ranked 22nd. Sealy is also a member of the 4X400-meter relay team comprised of Alia McAfee, Jordan Frey and Shandel Ellis, which qualified with a season-best time of 3:41.40.
In the distance events, Jess Husted, the 2011 Outdoor Valley 1,500-meter champion, will compete in the event after qualifying with a personal-best time of 4:24.74 for a 31st-place ranking. Aisha Praught qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:23.56 and is ranked 21st. Praught will be competing in the event with teammate Kristen Zillmer, who qualified with a personal-best time of 10:40.34, ranked 40th. Samantha Bluske's 10,000-meter time of 34:25.55, which is a personal-best, put her in 25th place heading into the regional.
Two-time MVC outdoor champion in the javelin, Tim Glover will look to make the NCAA Championships for the second-straight season and leads a strong group of ISU men into the regional. The Normal, Ill., native heads into the meet ranked first after recording the farthest throw in the nation at the Valley Championships last weekend with a heave of 259-09. The best throw in the nation set Valley, MVC Outdoor Championship and school records. Akil Mills will compete in the hammer throw in hopes of reaching the NCAA Championships as a freshman with a throw of 190-03.25 and is ranked 23rd. Curt Jensen will compete in the shot put at the regional. Jensen heads into the regional ranked 32nd with a personal-best throw of 57-02.75. In the triple jump, Tyler Knight ranks 45th in the event with a personal-best mark of 49-06.25. Scott Krapf will represent the men on the track in the 10,000-meter run with a qualifying mark of 29:51.79, ranking 41st in the region.
