McShea Awarded MVC Leadership & Service Accolade

ST. LOUIS - Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin named Illinois State senior distance runner Kelly McShea a recipient of the MVC Leadership & Service Award, as announced Wednesday afternoon.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring) for a total of 30 honorees.

McShea earned the award based on her strong academic standing and selfless demeanor in the community. The special education major holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.45 and has captured AFNI Honor Roll accolades the last four semesters. Within the community, McShea is a recess buddies volunteer, trick-or-treats for canned goods, Easter Seals volunteer, plays Uno with the elderly, bowling with special education and helps with Prairieland Family Fitness Fair and Red Cross Evening with the Stars. The junior distance runner is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Representative and is a member of the Department of Athletics Leadership Academy. In addition to her committee memberships, McShea is the Missouri Valley Conference Representative-Elect.



Along with her academic success and community involvement, McShea was named the 2012-13 Rookie of the Year for women's track and field, as she recorded eight top-five finishes on the outdoor circuit, including three consecutive second-place finishes in the 1,500-meter.  She captured a personal-best 10:10.59 in the steeplechase to finish 14th at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

Joining McShea, this year's Spring honorees include Kendall Duffy, Bradley, Softball; Jeffrey Foreman, Drake, Men's Outdoor Track & Field; Quinn Vilneff, Evansville, Men's Golf; McCall Christopher, Indiana State, Women's Golf; Mary Whitmore, Loyola, Women's Outdoor Track & Field; Eric Straub, Missouri State, Men's Golf; Jamie Fisher, Northern Iowa, Softball; Anita Lee, Southern Illinois, Women's Tennis; Montse Blasco Fernandez, Wichita State, Women's Tennis.

The Redbirds are back in action this Friday and Saturday, as they will host their only event of the 2013-14 campaign.
