In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring) for a total of 30 honorees.

McShea earned the award based on her strong academic standing and selfless demeanor in the community. The junior distance runner is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Representative and is a member of the Department of Athletics Leadership Academy. In addition to her committee memberships, McShea is the Missouri Valley Conference Representative-Elect.

Along with her academic success and community involvement, McShea was named the 2012-13 Rookie of the Year for women's track and field, as she recorded eight top-five finishes on the outdoor circuit, including three consecutive second-place finishes in the 1,500-meter.  She captured a personal-best 10:10.59 in the steeplechase to finish 14th at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
