ST. LOUIS— Curt Jensen and Ryan Rutherford take home Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week honors for their performances this past weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic, as announced by the league office Wednesday.

This marks the second time both athletes have received the honor for the outdoor season and is Jensen’s sixth Athlete of the Week accolade for the 2013-14 track and field campaign.

Jensen broke his own school record and Missouri Valley Conference record in the shot put, tossing 20.21-meters (66-03.75) Saturday evening at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Classic. Jensen earned a personal-best, tossing the winning mark on his final attempt, bypassing Southern Illinois’ Josh Freeman who set the former record earlier this year at 19.35 meters (63-06.00). The Colona, Ill., native threw past 66-feet a second time, after throwing 20.13 meters (66-00.50) on his third attempt, for his final throw to break his own record. With that throw, he currently sits in the No. 2 spot on the NCAA leaderboard right behind Ryan Crouser of Texas. Jensen also tossed a mark of 57.17-meters (187-07) in the hammer throw to finish 16th in a competitive field.

Rutherford captured his second-consecutive ISU record with a time of 13:49.99 in the men’s 5,000-meter showcase race to finish second at the Jesse Owens Classic Friday evening. Rutherford bested the former Redbird record set by Dave Irion in 1980 by seven seconds, finishing second to ISU track and field and cross country graduate assistant Lex Williams, who ran unattached. Williams finished with a 5K time of 13:45.11, breaking the meet record of 14:01.62 he previously set while running at Michigan. The next collegiate runner to finish was Eastern Michigan’s Harry Dixon who ran 14:12.65 to place seventh. His 5K time of 13:49.99 currently sits in the No. 20 slot on the NCAA leaderboard.

Both Rutherford and Jensen will compete in the Drake Relays Thursday through Saturday and return home to the Redbird Track May 3, for Illinois State’s only home meet of the season.
