Rutherford Takes Home Athlete of the Week Honors
April 8, 2014
ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Valley Conference named Ryan Rutherford Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational.
In his first event of the 2014 outdoor season, Rutherford ran to a record-breaking time of 28.41.23 Friday evening at the Stanford Invite to capture an Illinois State and Missouri Valley Conference record in the 10,000-meter run. The junior distance runner beat the former Valley record of 28:42.71 set by Jeff Schirmer of Southern Illinois in 2011 and was 18 seconds faster than the 15-year old ISU record set by Julius Mwangi in 1999. The junior bested his former personal-record by over a minute, notching a fifth-place finish overall in a competitive 75-man field. Rutherford’s time currently sits as the No. 5 best time on the NCAA leaderboard.
This accolade marks Rutherford’s first honor for track and field, as the Bloomington, Ill., native earned all-conference and all-regional honors during his 2013 cross country campaign.
The Redbirds return to action this Thursday, as they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Sea Ray Relays.
