Redbirds Head East for Orange and Blue Open

NORMAL, Ill.—The men’s and women’s track and field teams travel east Saturday Feb. 22, to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the Orange and Blue Open.

Joining Illinois State in the field will be Missouri Baptist and host school Illinois. Field events are set to begin at 10 a.m., with running events to follow at noon.

On the women’s side, Sarah Mussallem and Printassia Johnson will highlight the women sprinters, as they compete in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter sprint, while Haley Goers and Kaley Ummel look to lead the Redbirds in the mile. Ummel clocked a personal-best 800-meter time of 2:15.49 last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.

On the men’s side, Chase Pavelonis will look to continue his success in the pole vault, while Akil Mills and Curt Jensen will highlight the throwing events. Mills threw a personal-best 21.23m (69-08.00) in the weight throw at the Iowa State Classic to earn a top-10 spot on the NCAA leaderboard.



In the distance events, Jeff Bajema and Tyler Morse will toe the line in the 3,000-meter race, while Ryan Bybee will look to lead the Redbirds in the 800-meter run. In the sprints, ISU will look to Raimon Clay and Nathan Schreiber, as they compete in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter sprint, while Coty Kramer will highlight the men’s 400-meter race.

This will be the final event of the regular season for the Redbirds, as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, March 1-2, for the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
